FEMEPA

This project was born with two purposes. On one hand, the academic objective. On the other, the opportunity to build a broader perspective on a project in which I had participated years earlier and with which I had felt deeply committed. It is the Master's Thesis for the MBA Tech Speciality that I completed during the 2024–2025 academic year at the International University of La Rioja (UNIR). Therefore, in addition to a more technological perspective, the project also provides a strategic and commercial vision.

The objective of the project was to develop a digital transformation proposal for the Metal and New Technologies Business Federation of Las Palmas (FEMEPA), a non-profit organization that brings together 32 business associations and organizations in the province of Las Palmas, Canary Islands. The proposal focuses on identifying digital innovation opportunities to improve operational efficiency, member experience, and the economic sustainability of the federation.

The Story

Based on that experience, I found an opportunity to dive deeper into the less technical aspects of the project and better understand the needs and expectations behind an initiative of this nature. At Femepa, as in many companies, I identified a series of common patterns: a strong dependency on a single client, tasks heavily reliant on manual processes, rigid structures, and economic models excessively dependent on public subsidies. Despite having extensive industry knowledge and a strong connection with associated companies, there was a clear gap between the value they could provide and the way that value was delivered. From that reflection, my Master's Thesis was born: a digital transformation proposal for FEMEPA aimed not only at modernizing processes, but also at redefining the organization's role within the Canary Islands business ecosystem. The goal was to build a more sustainable, scalable model focused on high value-added digital services.

The project combined strategic analysis, technological vision, and digital service design. Digital maturity studies, PESTEL and PORTER analyses, customer journey maps, and value proposition models were developed to identify real innovation opportunities within the federation. Based on that analysis, initiatives related to process automation (RPA), intelligent document management, digital member experience, and the integration of tools based on artificial intelligence and data analytics were proposed.

One of the most interesting aspects of the project was understanding that digital transformation does not depend solely on technology. It also involves organizational culture, people’s adaptability, and the ability to create new relationship models with clients and members. The work specifically addresses this interdependence between technology, business, and corporate culture. The proposal also introduced a vision strongly oriented toward product thinking and economic sustainability: transforming traditional services into scalable digital services capable of generating new revenue streams and increasing loyalty among associated companies. This approach directly connects with areas such as innovation, technology consulting, digital platform design, and business strategy.

A project driven by the desire to contribute, even in a small way, to an organization that provides distinctive value to businesses and to Canary Islands society.
